Picturesque, tree lined streets, a charming and walkable downtown, and houses ranging from modest family homes to gracious estates have garnered the area many accolades and much attention. Niche.com ranked Short Hills #2 (out of #647) of the Best Places to Raise a Family in NJ, and #21 in the entire country (out of 18,501). As for the schools, Niche.com has given Millburn Public Schools the top spot: #1 out of 415 across the state! Clearly, residents are getting what they pay for, considering this affluent town has the highest property tax rate in Essex County.
Millburn families enjoy many town amenities, including a community pool, a par-three golf course, the South Mountain Reservation and the Cora Hartshorn Arboretum and Bird Sanctuary. There’s no shortage of green space with 16-acre Taylor Park located right in downtown. Locals can be seen playing tennis, basketball, baseball or frisbee, or simply just walking and talking. For an indoor experience, catch a show at the Paper Mill Playhouse––a local, yet nationally recognized musical theater, and a true community gem.
Millburn and Short Hills each have their own train stations that exit riders into the heart of local commerce where they might stop in somewhere to pick up a loaf of fresh artisan bread or dinner to go. Specialty boutiques contribute to the area charm, drawing shoppers away from strip malls and back to the mom & pops. The Mall at Short Hills is arguably the best in the state and is located on the western side of the township. But if big name luxury retailers aren’t your thing, both municipalities have quaint downtowns.
Millburn and Short Hills have easy access to routes 78, 24 and 22.
